Choosing The Right DUI Lawyer for You

We all think that it may never happen to us, but getting a DUI isn't exclusive to certain people. Anybody is at risk of a DUI no matter how much they have had to drink. Instead of thinking you are free from ever needing a good criminal lawyer Oakland, you should learn how to research, interview, and find a good lawyer ahead of time. Preparation is always the best defense.

Often times, a lawyer's website or ad will talk about the number of years experience they have with certain types of cases, such as DUIs. While experience is definitely an important factor in choosing any type of lawyer, simply practicing for so many years does not make a good lawyer. Look at the cases and track record of the lawyer. If they say they have 12 years experience, make sure that isn't 12 years of bad cases.

Be wary of lawyers who 'do it all.' There are a lot of lawyers out there simply looking to pay the bills. These guys will do wills, divorces, DUI, and almost any other type of case. Unfortunately, this type of lawyer hasn't mastered any one area of law and is more likely to simply show up and not put in the time and effort your case may need.

Going through any court proceeding can be a stressful time for anybody. When things get rough, you want to know that you have a lawyer who will have your back and makes you feel like they care. Chances of you finding a lawyer who will be there to hold your hand all the time is unlikely, but you should feel respected and comfortable with your attorney.

Read contracts carefully before signing. The contract between you and your attorney spells out what they are and are not responsible for doing. DUI cases can require more work than going to court. There may be pre- and post-court appearances, paperwork, or other details that need to be taken care of. Be sure your lawyer will help you anything that may arise after your hearing.

While you may not ever be able to really tell how well your attorney will handle your case, taking this advice to heart can help lead you in the right direction. The keys are to ask questions, do your research, and listen to your gut.
